Velvet Underground

Damn. My roots are getting baaad. And I meant to call the salon today to set up an appointment, buuut I lost track of time and now it's too late! I guess I'm going to be wearing hats this week? Unless I can get in tomorrow or Sunday...

Today I had on four different outfits, and actually at this very moment I'm wearing something else. I had my hair done three different ways today too. So indecisive! The weather was indecisive too. It was raining this morning and now it's sunny and warm. I guess I'm taking cues from the weather now.

shirt/hot topic :: dress/lulu e. bebe :: shoes/payless

Little Bit is totally pissed that I'm forcing her to be in my photos. Lately she doesn't want to hang out with me! I'm bummed. I think I need to get a Jack Russell for my Brave trip. They are just such good dogs. My Dad would kill me if I stole Little Bit though. Maybe I should get a Jack Russell puppy this summer and then by the time we go on the trip, she'll be trained? Who knows. Having an unruly dog could make the trip annoying, but having a good dog could make it amazing! What if my dog gets car sick? That's no good. My friend had a German Shepherd who would get car sick all the time, but not when I drove him. I think a Brave is too small for a big ol' German Shepherd though.

It's Business Time

Ugh, I finally have a day to myself! Off to answer emails, take photos, and do other business related activities... you know what that means... It's business time...

P.S. Kill me now. This Brave was posted TODAY, and it already sold. :(

Well, she wasn't the one, folks. It was a hard decision. She had a perfect interior, ran great, had an amazing floor plan, was the perfect length, drove like a dream, but all in all it just ended up to be more of a project winne than a journey winne. I'm okay with it being a project. Actually, I'm in favor of it being a project, but this one was too much and I'm afraid it would've become a bottomless pit of project. The main issue (and the deal-breaker): bad roof. It was sagging in the back and there was some leakage, which caused the plywood underneath to swell and cause the roof to essentially kind of "delaminate." A good roof is a must. I was afraid that if we tried to take off the roof and fix it, it'd become one of those things where you take the roof off to fix and then find something else to fix, and then something else and so on. Plus, a roof replacement is thousands. And it needed new tires, new batteries, a heater.. just a bunch of little things that really add up. And... it wasn't actually a Brave. I didn't realize it initially because some crazy person spray painted over the original green side stripes to make them blue and in the process, erased where it said "INDIAN" on the side. I did like this layout a LOT though, so I may have to do some fudging on the Brave part (if I find another 1975 23' Indian) and just pretend that an Indian is a Brave.

Through this all, I've learned a lot about what I want and need, though. I kinda feel like it was a relationship (though short-lived). We went out, had some good times, and then decided that we weren't right for each other. We both needed different things out of the relationship and it was too much work on my part. But coming out of it, I learned a lot about who I am and what I want in a relationship (Brave). So, I've learned a lot about the different floor plans of the different lengths and models, and as of right now, I'm gunning for a '76 Brave 26 ft, a '75 Indian 23 ft (which was the one I just passed on), or a 73 Brave/Indian (20 ft/22ft respectively).
Gotta be original interior. Gotta flaunt the flying "W." I'll find you, darling... you're out there somewhere.

With all this winnebago-ing I've not had time to do regular posting. I'll get the winner of the Appareil Photo giveaway up later tonight after work!

I wish making important decisions wasn't so damn difficult.

The truth is out there

Does anyone else feel like there are just simply not enough hours in a day? I mean, it's not like I'm busy doing things I don't want to be doing. Well, I mean, work isn't really my favorite place to be, but I like my job and I'm making money, so I'm certainly not wasting time there. So I spend 10 hours of my day there, well, 11 counting lunch, then I come home and I have six hours until I absolutely must be in bed. All those hours are spend taking photographs and blogging and catching up on internet things.

I'm hoping that once the Brave comes into my life I'll still have time to do all the things I love doing! I promise to take lots of photos of my progress on whatever Brave I end up getting. Right now I'm praying for the right thing to happen at the right time. Things are kind of out of my hands for the time being, so I'm trying to remain calm and constantly remind myself that things will come together at the right time and in the right way.

dress/wet seal :: shirt/thrifted :: boots/target

I'm just so excited to get working on it, you know? I hope you guys don't mind me rambling on about Winnebago stuff. I'll probably have a new photo pal, too, haha. I'm actually kind of hoping to get one that's a little run down. I feel like we'll bond over the restoration process. Okay, I have to stop talking about this, I'm getting too antsy!

Before I went outside the thermometer said it was 57 degrees, but I'm calling BS on that. It was so not 57 degrees. I'm gonna say 47 degrees at most. Such a gross dreary day! My computer tells me that the sun will come out this weekend and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival!
Speaking of arrival, one of my best friends from Washington is coming up for the summer! He'll be arriving sometime this weekend and I can't wait! He's gonna be living about 3 hours away from me, but with my 3 day weekends I hope to get out there. Maybe you'll actually see pictures of me being social!

Oh, and just a friendly reminder! You can get 15% off at Vintage Strings through the end of the month with the promo code "delight15"! Take advantage before April comes to a close!

Plaid + Giveaway

The weekend never lasts long enough. I took three trips to and from the Valley looking at Braves. I have yet to procure one, but I have learned what I do and do not want. Having never actually been inside the different lengths and floor plans, it was nice to get an idea of what they all feel like. While the shorter 19' model is adorable because of it's stoutness, the floor plan is just a little too cramped. Well, not cramped, but just not the feel that I'd like. The 24' model is just wonderful. I'll let you guys know if anything exciting happens. For now I'm still just waiting to hear back from people and figuring out what moves I'd like to make.

Thanks for your encouragement on my last post. I was never considering not going on the journey, simply contemplating the ramifications of such a journey. I'm hoping it will be a galvanizing experience and am thoroughly looking forward to both the hardships and fun to be had.
I'm hoping that I'll get back to making some of my own art with more free time. It's strange to think that I'll be quitting my job and going on the road. My only source of income will be this blog and... er... singing on street corners with a hat for donations? I guess I'll have to tap into my inner entrepreneur? Maybe I'll walk around the campsites offering to draw people's RV's.

shirt/wet seal :: skirt/thrifted :: shoes/keds :: scarf/KDIKIO vintage

Kristen, from KDIKIO Vintage sent me this gorgeous scarf to style up. When I saw it on her site, it just totally reminded me of a vintage Winnebago. The floral and plaid prints are just perfection! I've never really worn a scarf like this before, but I put it on and the oversized bow just looked too fun!

Lucky for you guys, we're giving this beauty away!

Just leave a comment on this post before 9 pm AKST Saturday, May 1 and it just may be yours! Make sure to leave an email address where you can be contacted in case you win. Open to International entrants. And visit the KDIKIO Vintage shop to check out all the other sweet vintage goodies she's got!

Ring around the rosie

I've been traveling to and from the Matsu Valley the past few days, and I forgot how beautiful it is out there. I'm thinking of going back today to take pictures! It's about an hour and a half drive, but so worth it. I love taking pictures in the good ol' backyard but as the weather warms up I think it'll be fun to explore more "exotic" locations.

The sun has finally come out to stay, for a bit at least. Our house is kind of like a greenhouse, it heats up really fast when the sun hits it. It makes it feel like summer! Plus, the snow is almost all gone. Of course, for now the grass is nasty, matted, brown and littered with all the dog poop that was stuck in the snow all winter. It's finally supposed to get up into the 50's, though, this weekend! I need to get my bike all tuned up and my tires inflated. I'm vowing to bike all the time this summer.

I've been thinking more and more about the Brave journey as I've been looking for the right one. It's strange to think about living on my own again, much less living on my own rambling around in a 35 year old motorhome. I've lived on my own before, but having been at home again for almost a year I feel like I've gotten "soft". I'm trying to mentally prep myself for being alone on the road. It's hard to envision being out there, just going. I keep closing my eyes and pretending that I'm going for miles and miles. Pulling into camp at the end of the day. Will the silence be overwhelming? Will I be lonely? Will I be scared? Part of me thinks that that is why I'm going. I want to feel self-sufficient. All I've ever wanted is to know I can make it on my own, with no one holding my hand, no safety net, no training wheels.

Appareil Photo Giveaway!

Sorry I have been AWOL today! I actually did things in the real world! I know, baby steps. It's like when you take an animal in captivity and try to release it back into the wild. I'm Free Willy!

So before today is over (well, for me... I guess it is over for most of you) I wanted to post this giveaway! Hannah, from Appareil Photo, is offering one of her gorgeous prints to one lucky winner! She was nice enough to send me one of her prints and now it's hung proudly on my wall. I really love it, it goes perfectly with all my other things which I have hanging on my walls.
She has photos from all over the world! Iceland, Milwaukee, New York, Russia... I think my favorite ones are her photos from Iceland. I feel like I would really resonate with a sort of nordic sensibility. Or maybe I just like how it looks there... haha!

This giveaway is for any print in her shop and to enter, all you have to do is head over to the Appareil Photo shop and pick out your favorite print. In the comment section, tell me which one you'd like to have hanging on your wall and leave your email address so I can contact you if you win!

Entries will be accepted until 9 PM AKST on Tuesday, April 27th. This giveaway is open to international entrants.

This is how we multiply

More family! We have tons of old pictures and I think my favorites are from when my mom and dad first met and were married. I should dig up some photos of me when I was a tiny version of me, those were good times in the Golden State.
My mom and dad met at college (the same one I went to). He was from Alaska and she was from California. Pretty opposite environments! As you can see, he was a commercial fisherman, and also a carpenter.

This picture kind of cracks me up. My dad met my grampa and my grampa thought he was a smart alec, haha. Of course, he is a smart alec, but he definitely grew on my grampa. Look at that striped shirt! Stylin!

They went to San Francisco once on a little trip. I love this picture of my mom. She's so cute in her hat, button up shirt and rolled sleeves, and high waisted flair jeans. Plus, what better back drop than a harbor?

I love this picture too. For some reason this photo epitomizes love to me. Maybe it's just that I want someone to want to take wooded, backlit photos of me when we're hiking through a gorgeous photo. I wonder if she knew she was going to spend forever with the person hiding behind the camera. Maybe that's why it epitomizes love to me.

These pictures were taken after they were married and living in Honolulu, Hawai'i. She's probably about my exact age in these photos. Their little dog is so cute. She became kind of crazy after having to go through quarantine, somewhere there's a picture of her in a sea of ripped up toilet paper. It's hilarious. Also, their mopeds are a crack up.

Little Katie dog! She kind of went crazy after having to spend months in quarantine when they moved to Hawai'i. They have this picture of her surrounded by ripped up toilet paper which is pretty hilarious. I'll have to find it and scan it.

I have a giveaway coming up later today so stay tuned!

Video Killed the Radio Star

So I was asked what I do for makeup, and I have always been too chicken to make a video but I thought I'd give it a go and show you all my makeup "regimen" (if you can call it that). It ended up being hella long, so kudos to anyone who can make it through me being a silly goon for a quarter of an hour. If I do another one I'll try to made it shorter...

Here is a list of the makeup I use, since I don't think I told you exactly what products I use. If you click the link, it'll take you where you can buy it! Most of my stuff is by Motives, so you can also click the Motives link on my side bar and look through their other products too.

And speaking of makeup!
The winner of the Vamp Lipstick giveaway is...

Carina of BadTasteToast!

Here's the gorgeous outfit she created on Couturious!

and... I found an amazing jewelry shop through her blog...Labyrinth Jewelry & Accessories.

My wallet is doing that thing again, where it creeps out of my purse and towards my computer screen. They have super cute necklaces and rings. Animal rings! Too much fun!

Also, I want to debut my "shop my closet" thingy! I'll try to keep it updated, and I'll let you guys know when I put new stuff up. Hopefully the "buy it now" buttons work. I've never done it before, so I'm sure they'll be kinks to work out. Make sure to pick where you want the item to be shipped - US or International - before clicking "buy it now." Lets see if this works!

Oh, and just one more order of business... I made an FAQ page and I tried to include the questions I'm most often asked. If there are any more questions you'd like me to answer, let me know and I'll try to include them!

Blogger of the Moment! The ninth edition...

I met Andrea through Tieka, and both girls have become my online BFFs. Well, I guess real BFFs facilitated by the internet, haha. I was so excited to be able to stay with these two while we were in NYC for Fashion Week in February, it was truly a blast. Andrea's style is so striking and sophisticated. Stylewise, she's like my adult older sister who has her career on fast track and thrives on the city, whereas I'm the little girl running through the woods getting her dresses torn on rogue branches. I love her unique perspective and style, and DUH! Her hair! We were hair twinsies- ying and yang, when we were in New York. We almost even cut bangs in her hair! Mark my words, next time we're together, I'm bringing my scissors...

Without further adeiu.... Andrea from Blonde Bedhead!

DT: You've started your style blog pretty recently, what was it that inspired you to start one up?

Andrea: That last couple years I’ve used lookbook.nu and other sites to browse for inspiration and I’ve always wanted to share my personal style. Tieka of Selective Potential is who really inspired me to first take the plunge and sign up for these sites. She’s one of my best friends and she really helped guide me along the way. From getting involved with those sites, I wanted to take it further by starting my own blog citing the same reason as many people state-- a creative outlet. It’s no secret Michigan may not be the trendiest, most fashion forward state and it’s great to connect with like-minded individuals who share a similar interest and passion.

DT: What do you find is your inspiration for putting together outfits? Is there anything that you would say epitomizes your style?

A: I’m inspired by my parents partly and my background. All the clothing I owned growing up was out of utility—nothing fashionable, but very simple. I continue to wear simple silhouettes, muted colors and clothes out of pure comfort. I’m also inspired by my dad who is never without his leather vest, leather cuffs and motorcycle boots. Like my dad, I love wearing leather and cotton. I don’t wear very much color or pretty, whimsical things—just isn’t me. I refer to Lookbook and Chictopia for help with styling outfits.

DT: What do you like doing outside of your interest in fashion?

Hobbies, etc?

A: Outside of fashion, I’m interested in photography, music, writing and getting involved in fun side projects and

organizations. I absolutely love photographing people. I shoot weddings, but I also love shooting candid portraits—particularly of close friends. I also enjoy being busy with different projects so I’m usually working on different community events or attending various networking groups in my town. I still love going to shows to see some of my favorite bands. Especially with camera in tow, I can practice my photography and document the night. I enjoy constantly challenging myself, meeting new people and getting involved in a variety of projects involving talent retention, art and music.

DT: What is your current job entail? What would you say is your dream job?

A: I am the Assistant Communications Officer at Capital Area Michigan Works!, a government workforce development agency. I do public relations and marketing which entails a lot of writing, photography, event planning and assisting in strategic planning. I’m an associate photographer for Jason Aten Photography, a boutique wedding photography studio. I’m also a freelance writer. I write stories, photograph and cover events for a couple different publications. My grad school courses feel like a job as well. I started my masters in journalism in Fall 2009 and have been taking classes as a part-time student.

My dream job—wow I don’t even know. I love working in public relations. I’m almost certain I have ADD so I like doing a variety of things and I get bored easily, so public relations is a great fit for me. I think a career in fashion public relations would be perfect the perfect career and I’d love to continue in wedding photography. Eventually, I’d love to be more entrepreneurial and start my own business. A long-term goal of mine is to earn my PhD. and teach any sort of visual communications/photography-type courses at the collegiate level.

DT: Do you like living in Michigan? What about it is good/bad?

A: I do enjoy living in Michigan. The cost of living is inexpensive and it’s nice having four seasons—although I prefer not to live in Michigan during the winter. I absolutely hate snow so half the time I’m cursing at the state and its climate. I love so many of the cities in the state including Grand Rapids, Lansing and Detroit. I’m not an outdoorsy girl even though I was raised that way and I prefer to live in any downtown core. I like living in Lansing because it’s the capital city and it’s a close-knit community. I feel very connected and I like that.

DT: If you could move to or visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: I honestly haven’t done much traveling. I went to Niagara Falls once in fifth grade and that’s the extent of my international travel. I’d love to visit anywhere. I’m interested in visiting Tokyo and shopping and sightseeing in the Harajuku district. I love people watching and I think I would be just fascinated there. I’d also love to visit a couple European cities like London, Paris and Milan. I love learning about history and I think I would be captivated by the history and culture throughout Europe.

DT: What are your favorite blogs?

A: My favorite blog is Caroline.feber.se. Her style is quite similar to mine, except she’s a much bigger risk taker so I like to see what she does and draw inspiration from it. Her life seems so much more interesting than mine so I enjoy living vicariously through her travels and fashion shows. I also love Crowded Closet! The blog is ran by two friends in two different cities with different styles and the blog posts always involve interesting pictures, solid writing and lovely, inspiring styles.

DT: I had the pleasure of hanging out with you and Tieka during NYFW, what was your favorite part of being at NYFW?

A: I loved every moment of being in New York City and participating in NYFW festivities, but my absolute favorite was attending the fashion show with you. I was in awe the entire time. I felt like that’s where I belong. I was so inspired by the fashion, hair and make up of the actual show and then the

people surrounding the event. Just being in the vicinity was enough excitement for me. Walking up to Bryant Park and looking around, I was surrounded by inspiration. I also loved meeting so many great girls, especially during the Girls Night Out sponsored by Dove and organized by Jessica of What I Wore. I have so many guy friends and it was nice to be with ladies for once who shared similar interests.

DT: When did you become interested in style/fashion? Was there something that sparked your interest?

A: I’ve always been interested in style and fashion for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I was more into painting, sculpture and drawing. While my skill and talent in those areas never evolved, I developed an interest in different areas of art such as fashion, music and writing.

I grew up in a small, rural town and so I didn’t really learn anything about fashion until I went to Michigan State University where cultural diversity, independence and artistic expression reign. I got a taste of various styles of fashion, art and culture. Once I graduated college, I started making the extra effort to not live in sweatshirts like I did through undergrad and finally becoming more confident in trying new things.

DT: Describe your dream house.

A: My dream house would actually be a loft or condominium in a more urban area. I’m not big on yards so I’d be able to make those sacrifices to have a modern home in the city. I love natural light so huge windows and an open floor plan would be most desired. Mainly, I would love to be just steps away from shops and restaurants. I love the atmosphere in cities and would like to immerse myself in a downtown area where I could enjoy those amenities.

DT: In 5 years, where do you see yourself?

A: In five years I see myself finished with my masters, in a leadership position with some sort of public relations agency or private company. It’s funny because whenever I think of these questions all I can think of is where I will be professionally. I don’t think I’ll be married and I definitely won’t have kids. That has never been a priority for me and I’ve been quite satisfied with focusing on advancing my career and making new friends.

DT: What would you say has been the best part of blogging so far?

A: The best part of blogging so far is having a way to connect with other people from all over the world. I would have never gone to NYC if it weren’t for blogging and I met some amazing people. I’ve also been able to connect with other people in my city who share similar interests. My community is so supportive of my blog and I’ve been connected with other initiatives, ideas and events because people are learning more about me and my passion for art.

Social Distortion

I have a feeling my legs will become canvases for tiny scratches as the summer progresses. My favorite wooded photo location is infested with pokey little thorny sticks.

Well, the weekend has come to a close. I feel like that Loverboy song, Working for the Weekend, haha. I went out on Friday night with my friend Rebecca. We went up to the bar at the top of that super nice hotel, you know, trolling for swell fellows. We actually ended up meeting some guys, two of which latched on to us like velcro. I so am not into meeting guys at bars, well, I'm not really into meeting guys at all at this time in my life. It was funny though. It was nice being social, I guess. If you're a boy, you should know that my company usually costs about two or three rum and cokes. Phone number not guaranteed. I know what I like.

skirt/vintage :: dress(worn as top)/modcloth from Tieka via Delightful Dozen
scarf/from Tieka :: boots/minnetonka

I went thrifting this weekend too. Found some pretty neat things. Some florals! Speaking of florals, I absolutely adored this dress on Tieka, so I was thrilled when she sent it over to me! I always love re-envisioning dresses as tops or skirts. It seems to really expand a wardrobe. I've been kind of in a rut lately, so I'm hoping that looking at my closet with new eyes will freshen things up. Also, it hit 50 degrees here today, so we had a good melt. Hopefully the trend will continue and summery times will ensue.

I've been really wanting to splurge on some new vintage pieces, but I'm trying so hard to save money. But maybe I can live vicariously through you guys. I thought I'd share some of my favorite vintage shops online. For now I'm stuck scrimping and saving and window shopping. My next paycheck is going towards school loans instead of Winnebagoing, so I'm trying hard to resist superfluous spending.

Oh, and before I forget. I'm working on opening up a sort of "shop my closet" type thing. I was lazy this weekend and haven't finished it up, but I hope to share it with you all very soon!
