Blue Jean Baby Queen

Yesterday my younger brother went into heart surgery down at Seattle Children's Hospital. He made it through fine and is recovering now, though he'll probably stay for a bit to make sure everything is "settling in" alright. If my facts are right (and if they're not, I'm sure my Dad will email me with a correction), I think the procedure he got was replacing an old valve which was actually a pig valve (yes, from the animal) that wasn't working- which meant that instead of properly keeping blood moving in the right direction, it was just sloshing back and forth. So he got a new valve inserted, which is a cow valve, I believe. With new technology his valve replacement could be done through a catheter! It's pretty unbelievable what modern medicine can do. He's incredibly blessed, medical science is staying one step ahead of his condition(s), basically keeping him alive. He's had multiple experimental procedures, and we've been waiting for this most recent procedure to be FDA approved for over a year. He's kind of the bionic boy what with all the hardware that keeps his heart running.

top/diy :: jeans/courtesy of Jessica Simpson :: boots/kensiegirl :: scarf/pashmina

The folks at Jessica Simpson asked me if I'd like to style a pair of the new denim line and, since I'm always on the lookout for a pair of jeans that will actually fit me, they sent me this pair of jeggings. I'm always skeptical that jeans will fit me. I have a body that most jean companies don't have any interest in fitting (big ass, tiny waist, short legs), so I was hoping that Jessica's line might appeal to a curvier backside while still fitting my waist. 90% of the time when I try on jeans, they have this huge gap above my butt between the waistline and my back. But Lo! These fit like an absolute dream! I think my jaw almost dropped when I looked at the back and they were like... sculpted to my curves. I must say, I'm a pretty big fan right now. Granted, I've never tried any of her other jeans' styles, but seeing how well these ones fit, I'd definitely be open to trying something else! I also am a fan of how they're pretty inexpensive. Most of the line is around 50 bucks, which seems pretty good to me as far as designer stuff goes (can you consider Jessica's stuff "designer"? Maybe I'll just put quotations around it for good measure).

In case you were wondering, that ^ is how happy I am about quitting my job. Woo!

I share in your big butted/short legged/small waisted dilemma. I might have to look into those jeans (even thought I really hate the term "jegging," but I'm willing to place my hatred of word smooshing for well-fitted jeans).

I'm so glad that your brother is ok. I loved the fit ... it was too cute. Simple but cute. I have the same problem you have with jeans and let me tell you... jeggings are the best place to go! They fit perfect.

that is some major major surgery your bro got done. it is wonderful to hear that he had successful surgery. I am so glad!!! I have a few family members who had it done a few times. I pray he never will need it ever again.

I laughed about your Jessica Simpson designer question.

Oh my! I have the exact same jean problem. Huge butt, small waist, short, short legs!! It's horrible and so hard! I may have to look into these pants! JSimpson, you may have spoken to us petite girls!

I'm sorry to hear about your brother- but excited that he's okay!! My cousin had a heart condition that required he get a pig valve, too, but unfortunately when he was eight, they didn't catch that it was failing in time. It's so horrible that such young kids have to go through such hardships. And usually the best of kids!! Yay for modern science:)

yay for big booties that are impossible to fit jeans around! i feel ya, sister. at first, when they started showing up in all sorts of acid wash terribl-ness, everything in me cried out against the "Jegging", but now...well, their just so damn comfy and they fit so well...I guess I'm a believer.

So glad to hear your brothers recovering well. nothings scarier than seeing a loved one undergo major surgery. I hope this one is the last he'll need. It seems like he's got an amazing support system in you and your parents. Hope he's home annoying you in that way only little brothers can soon.

love and prayers,

Me and my booty may have to seek out that Simpson denim! Great casual outfit, by the way. Hair envy, also.

I really like my jeggings, they fit just like skinnies but are so much more comfy. However I did go up a size. Love your simple styling with the scarf

I'm glad your brother is doing well. I wish him the best of luck!

its a relief to hear that other women have the same issues. i also have the big but small waist problem, but instead i'm between average height and tall height. so rarely my jeans will fit perfectly or they will either be too short or too long.

i'm so sorry to hear about your brother, but its good to know he had a successful surgery. i'll be praying for your family

I am glad your brother is ok! I wish him a speedy recovery and with a sister like you (energetic and bubbly) I'm sure he will.

Love you in these jeeggings! Its the perfect causal look (tee and jeans), but I love how you threw in the scarf as the pop. I am in love with the color of your pashmina and am now wanting one for my closet.

I'm totally the same, damn the booty! I live in London but when I was over in New York at Christmas I found a perfect pair of jeans for the big ass/small waist dilema - BDG jeans, which you can get in Urban. I bought 2 pairs they were so great and wear them all the time - you can see the pics on my blog.

Hope all is ok with you bro, xx

This is so weird--- my mom just got a valve replacement too! It was so scary for all of us, but it has brought our family so much closer together. I'm glad your brother is healing well!

My younger brother will have a similar heart surgery soon too. He already had to go through these procedure twice. But he is way stronger than we - his family - are, so that's good! All the best to you and your brother!

So glad to hear that everything with your brother is going good, it's amazing the things they can do with medicine these days!

Ugh, jeans are such a pain. I have the same problem big booty, small waist, only i have to worry about if they are also going to be long enough for me too! Maybe that's why I've had the same jeans for years...they actually fit!

i suffer from the exact same pants problem that you do. having been following your blog for awhile now, i noticed you mainly wear skirts and dresses, which is exactly what i do because i hate pants so much and almost never wear them. good thing i moved to california and away from the snow :p
i'm superpsyched to go track down those jeggings and try them on because they look great on you! maybe i'll find a similarly agreeable pair of pants to fix my pants dilemma

First- I must say that medical technology is incredibly amazing now a days! From a pig to a cow! Unbelievable. I hope your brother does well and he will definitely be in my prayers!

Second- I have the same problem as you do with jeans. Big butt/hips, tiny waist, short legs. I always end up getting pants hemmed and wearing a belt so the waist doesn't gap which they usually do. But if these worked for you...I might just have to go and investigate on my own as well.

Love your blog!

This is such a cute casual look on you. I have a problem with jeans too - my butt is big but my waist is tiny. Those look perfect on you though!

I am so happy to hear that you little brother is doing okay! It is so amazing to hear stories like that!

Your outfit is adorable & I seem to have your same predicament: big ass, tiny waist, short legs. Seems to me that we are impossible to dress with denim! Love the jeggings! Congrats on the styling job!

oh I lvoe that last picture of you! so cute. My dad has had a problem with his heart for forever and he got a pig valve through open heart last year. It sucks that it has to be redone so often (as in every 10-15 yrs) but it is so amazing what medicine can do. I'm glad your brother is doing well!

those jeans look so fantastic on you! I have been considering the jeggings idea for awhile and seeing as I haven't had a lot of success with skinny jeans (they either don't fit slim enough or are way too tight and constricting) I might have to see about these Jessica Simpson jeggings. My short legs are excited about the prospect of jeans without tailoring!

Ahhh my nerdy medical student side comes out reading this post and the above post. Such a miracle - does he have hypoplastic right heart syndrome?

How exciting about the bovine valve! I'm so glad to hear that he got that, especially because the porcine valve was failing (they last ~10 years).

I just loved reading both stories, and I am so touched. I'm so jealous that you get to see everyone at NYFW! I wish I could be there and meet you all -- ah wells maybe next time! :)

omg you look absolutely FABULOUS! I would love to find a pair of "jeggings" that I could wear and wouldn't scare off the entire east coast. and i'm extremely happy that your brother is doing well and recovering. i have a heart condition too that limits me from doing everday normal activities. it's quite a struggle battling with this kind of illness, i'm sure. I'll pray for him and your family too!

I'm glad to hear that things are looking good so far for your brother - I hope his recovery continues to go smoothly.

As for your outfit, I really like those jeans! I would not have thought of miss simpson as a fabulous clothing "designer" but I have to say, so far the shoes and the jeans are impressing me.

Stel said...

Glad your brother is okay :) your mum's piece on him was interesting to read.

In terms of jeans, try the new levis curve range! so good!! you can get three different cuts within each normal cut - slight, demi and bold. Each depends on a variety of different measurements.

Noemie said...

I get what you mean about science helping people you love live, my half brother has the same problem as yours and one of the valve of his heart was replaced by a pig's right after birth. in a few years, it'll have to be changed and i'm sure that by then technology will have advanced some more...

i also agree with your shape thing about jeans; although i'm not as short as you (i'm 5'5), i have the same problem with finding jeans that will fit my large butt as well as fit nicely around my tiny waist! i have found that levi's sometimes has things that fit me fine but i always have to wait for the sales because i cant' really afford to pay over £100 for a pair of jeans! lovely pictures by the way! x

I'm definitely iffy about the jegging thing. I've seen some that look fine, and I've seen some that look, mot so great.... These look cute though! And I like your scarf!
