le fabuleux destin

I was on my favorite decor blog, Design*Sponge, and I saw one of their great "living in" posts, where they take a great film and translate the setting into fabulous home decor. The one yesterday was for Amelie and I realized I hadn't seen the movie since around when it came out, so I hopped over to netflix thinking to myself that I couldn't possibly have such luck that it would actually be on instant play, but lo! It was on instant play, and so I watched it again last night. It's such a charming film. I love movies that have atypical love stories because the "romance" movies made so often here in the states portray such a homogenized version of falling in love. Pretty much all romance movies in the US have the same plot, or variations of a similar theme. I love the story of these two odd ball introverts with odd idiosyncrasies falling in love from afar. I resonate a lot more with that kind of story than with the ridiculous romantic comedies coming out every few months.

My favorite part of this movie is the narration of the weird things that people like or dislike. Pretty funny stuff. I actually wonder a lot of odd things like Amelie does. I think that foreign films have a lot more artistic leeway than US movies. Then again, they are made for different audiences. In college my friends used to rent obscure foreign films and we'd all watch them. We were so sophisticated, no? Hahah. I don't really remember that many of them, but I liked watching them and getting a different perspective.

This "incognito" look was one of my favorites. I haven't worn headscarves in such a long time and I've been longing to lately. They just look so retro and chic.

If you haven't seen Amelie yet, do so! If you have netflix you can watch it right now on instant play!

Amelie is such a feel good movie about a world that COULD exist but for many reasons, cannot. I love the gold/green/blue color theme throughout. It was one of my favorite movies back in the day when it first came out. I watched it recently with my boyfriend and it just wasn't the same for some reason. :/

I love that you posted about this because it's been my favourite movie ever since I first saw it while living in Switzerland. I love the quirky love story, the random photo clipping album, how the animals in her pictures share glances about her, the likes and dislikes that you mention - I could go on and on. LOVE this movie.
I actually bought the music books by Yann Tiersen who composed the soundtracks because I thought the music was so pretty.

Haha - sorry for the novel, I"m just always so pleased when someone else sees this and enjoys it too.

This is one of my all-time favorites. Even the soundtrack is spectacular. I have visited Montmartre twice and toured where the scene with the arrows was filmed. So lovely!

I only saw this for the first time about a month ago. I was so behind! But when I finally watched it I was so impressed. I really want to buy it, actually, so I can watch it whenever I want (even though I have Netflix Instant.. I just want to hold the DVD! haha).

I LOVE Amelie! Wonderful movie and highly underappreciated. And the styling of the set and the characters is beyond lovely. So unique. I might have to bounce over to Netflix right now to check it out. :)

This movie is 110% outstanding. I was a bit put off to watching it when it first came out because it was in a different language... but as the movie went on I fell more and more in love.

Foreign films always seem to have a much more artsy and poetic touch to them than recent American films. I think the closest we've ever gotten to the calibre would be Charlie Kaufman or Wes Anderson movies (They aren't the only ones... just the first two that came to my mind!).

I know it's almost cliche for "artsy" types to love this movie, but I absolutely adore it! Amelie's apartment is beyond perfect, and the soundtrack is probably my favorite ever. I fell in love with the movie the very first time I saw it, even though I (shhh!) watched it on YouTube so it wasn't the best quality. I watched it in a computer lab at my college, and the strangest thing happened - as I was walking back to my dorm, I looked on the ground and there were chalk arrows drawn on the sidewalk! Strange and wonderful :)

I love that you posted this! And on my birthday! It's like a present just for me haha. Amelie is my favorite movie EVER. I just spent 2 weeks in Paris with my boyfriend and we totally wanted to go to Montmartre and tour around all of the different places in the movie! But we didn't make it. We didn't plan well. Next time, though! I'm gonna get a picture of me looking through the binoculars at the top of all those stairs in the park!

I do agree that foreign films are more artistic than American films. I mean American films some expections, but I feel like with foreign films you get more depth.
