I'm not calling you a ghost

We visited our house last night and I went over to look at the tree-massacre next door. Pretty disappointing. Pretty much all of my pictures in the late winter and spring were taken in those woods, it's crazy that they are just not there anymore. We've lived in this house since 1997 and it's been the same that whole time. Now this radical change is happening and there's nothing we can do about it. Perhaps there's a life lesson buried in there somewhere. It was strange too, it smelled really odd, a very mechanical smell. It must've been the machines that cut down all the trees. So odd to see not only the woods replaced with no woods, but the natural smell replaced with gross industrial scents too.

dress/thrifted :: necklace/handmade :: shoes/minnetonka

I'm sure whoever bought the lot is going to build a big obnoxious house too. It's a really strange lot, so unless they got a great architect (unlikely), it will be awkwardly stuffed onto the property. Such a shame. I think a really cute modest sized house could've gone on that lot, but there's not a single house on our lake that isn't really big. Sometimes I don't understand why some people have such enormous houses. They don't even really use most of that space anyway. It's just storage for more stuff.
I ran across this house over at Design*Sponge today and fell head over heels in love. I mentioned Tumbleweed Tiny House Co. and Yurts a few weeks ago, and this house has a similar feeling. Very simple and natural. While I'm a big fan of tacky fake wood (hello, entire interior of the Brave), the real wood of this little cabin is perfection. I also love the idea of building my own home. My Dad and Grampa were carpenters and both of them can build pretty much anything (though my grampa's eyesight is going now, which makes it a lot more difficult. He still occasionally makes amazing little Alaska Native carvings. The organizer on my counter in my last post, and the miniature dog sled in this post were both made by him). I think it would feel incredible to create my own house. Maybe that will go on my bucket list, but for now I'm pretty pleased with the home Winnebago Ind. made me 37 years ago.

I found this dress at the thrift store and couldn't believe it. It's perfect for fall. Fall is definitely on its way up here, too. Time to get out of town, eh?! Know how you can smell when a season is shifting? I totally smelled fall in the air a couple days ago. Yikes! We tested the heat on the Brave though, and it was working. A little bit fussy, but definitely working. Yay! Now I need a fire/carbon monoxide alarm so I don't accidentally kill myself if the fumes go overboard/start a fire. Safety first!

*For clarification, I don't just dislike people with big houses. My family has a very large house. I'm just bummed when people build unnecessarily large homes just for the sake of having a big showy house, and when they totally disregard a piece of land's topography and what kind of house would fit well there.*

The cut-down forest reminds me of Ferngully... :(
I also hate huge McMansions. I don't understand why people like them so much. I just want a house! I don't want a huge one :(

I'm sorry that you don't like people with big houses. Unfortunately, I guess, I have a large house but that's because I live with a family of 8 and every little knook and cranny is used up.

I love this dress on you and paired with your signature tights, its the perfect fall outfit!

this post is so granola; too bad the circumstances weren't better. it's always depressing to see the natural beauty destroyed for some industrial/corporate purpose. i live in nebraska, and most of the prairie is gone for corn and soy fields.

i wish people could just be happy with small, beautiful houses. here in omaha, there are a ton of neighbourhoods with the most darling little brick houses, and some larger ones, that are considered the best areas in town.

man... i remember when they cut down the woods behind the house I've lived in my whole life. I think i was in middle school and they filled up the lots with dozens of little cookie cutter houses. It's sad.

I love that little house, its so homey and welcoming. I can see sitting at that little table with a cup of tea and a book and relaxing.

And I love that dress, I'm jealous that fall is already making its way to you, I am dying for the heat to just break down in here in Tennessee.

@chaucee, I don't dislike people with big houses. My family has an enormous house, so that would be silly and hypocritical of me to hate people with big houses. I just don't like when houses are big just for the sake of being showy. People who live with many people need a larger space! By all means, it would be silly for a family of 8 to live in a smaller house!

love the outfit, the dress is a great find.

and I know exactly what you mean with the forrest. we have a little cottage by a lake less than an hours drive from here, and this one time when I drove up there the forrest was gone. just all gone, all of it. and the smell made me so sad. now there are a bunch of really annoyingly pastelly houses all tight up and close to each other with these really noisy and nosey people living there. i hate it.

You're smelling autumn in the air already! I'm soooo jealous! Saving these pics as inspiration for when fall truly hits NJ.

I agree with you on unnecessarily large houses and expensive items in general... I live in an area where everyone tries to "keep up with the Jones." Add to that the opulence of NYC lifestyles and you have a county full of cookie-cutter houses/mansions and no value for individuality. It's funny because you can find such awesome street style in NYC on someone who lives in a closet, but it just doesn't transfer across the river...

I'm so sad for your old forest area. I'm with Suze, it totally reminds me of Ferngully. Though it still looks beautiful in these pictures, albeit bittersweet, so that's something.

how sad :( luckily, vermont has really strict zoning laws and (most) people who live in a place like this don't value "stuff" very highly. still, it was very strange for me to come home from college and find out that a big house had been built in the woods behind my parents' house. it was built by a shaman who is quiet and respectful of the land and everything, but it is still odd to feel like i can't walk forever in the forest like i used to.

Sad :( Though it would be cool if they cut down those trees, and used the wood to build that little house on Design Sponge. Unlikely, but cool :)

As much as I fantasize about having a house with a room for husband and I, a study, a room turned into a giant closet, etc, I really love some of the tiny little 50s houses around here, for one thing, small is easier to clean! Our first place was a pretty large duplex, then we moved to an apt that is about 540 square feet, and it is much easier to keep up. Plus we got rid of tons of junk we really didn't need :)

Its always sad when people cut down trees, or destroy nature in general, I just read a book that a friend loaned over the summer called A Family Tree by Sharis Pepper, its a modern day fable about Trees coming to life taking over.

I love the yurts I know a guy whoes dream it is to live in one, they look really awesome actually I wouldn't mind having one. I don't need alot of space and I tend to gravitate towards cute small houses built in the 30'sand 40's in cute older neighborhoods.

That dress is fabulous! What a great find. Finding things that you are looking for in a thrift store is like finding gold, amazing feeling. I hear you about the houses. I don't understand families of like 2 building such gaudy, large houses just for show. Maybe your neighbors won't though!

These pictures of you make me kinda sad. Dead stumps everywhere. Sigh.

I really love that dress! I am actually interested to find out how you plan to weed down your wardrobe to fit into the Brave. I'm currently in the process of having to condense my wardrobe down to fit into two suitcases and one carry on (I'm moving overseas), so I would love it if you'd do a post sometime about how you plan to choose. I'm trying to suss out a method, like limiting myself to three signature cardigans, three skirts, etc etc. To make sure each piece counts. Anyway, I would love to find out how you plan to do this for yourself, and actually how it ends up working out (if according or plan or not!).

How sad to go back to where you once lived to see it "unloved". I really try hard to not go back to my favorite of our childhood homes. It was so lovely, and now it's someone's hillbilly cabin retreat. Blah.

Chin up!

And seriously, what a fabulous find in that dress!

Love your outfit!!! I hate that about the land...maybe the people that build there will surprise you :) You just never know!

Totally smelled fall here in Portland this afternoon. I was walking through my old college campus and it made me tear up a bit because I can't really go back anymore. What does fall mean when you aren't going back to school??? I haven't figured it out yet.

It makes me sad to see those beautiful trees cut down. I really dislike it when natural land is plowed over for industry or McMansions.

The city's government were I live is trying to do that to a gorgeous block of land that I keep my horse on {with a bunch of other horses} and I love riding out and seeing wedge tail eagles and other critters.

It makes me rather mad that the gov. won't listen to the community and keep the land like it is!

Whew, that was a bit of a rant wasn't it?

I love your dress, it was a great find.

I love your dress! It's weird to see you wearing it, though, cuz it looks so autumn-y and summer is barely starting here in SoCal. It's absolutely burning.

Oh, it's sad that so much life was cut down... The displacement of seeing something not there anymore is quite unsettling :(

On another note, I agree that the dress is perfect for autumn, and your tights are lovely~

I agree with you about the big house thing. People really don't NEED ginormous houses. My family and I live on a 45 ft sailboat and we're just fine. We've lived in bigger houses before and it seems like they all become big chaotic messes with all our junk. :P

Cute outfit! Love it.

So sad about that lot, I hate when trees are cut down, especially for a big obnoxious house.

In other news - I checked out that little cabin from the design sponge post, and it is essentially a dream come true. So adorably wonderful!

I can absolutely smell the changes in seasons. The smell of Autumn is my favorite of them all. People look at me like I'm crazy when I say that though.

I agree about building your own house. How amazing would it be to have this house "baby" that you made just the way you wanted?
