It was one of those amazing Alaskan summer days yesterday, and I really wished we could've gone out to our cabin, but alas! We sold it this summer and we don't even own it anymore! Kind of sad to see places that hold so many childhood memories be sold. I hope someday my kids have those kinds of places. Right now I feel like such a nomad that it's hard for me to even think about committing to settling in one place and just staying there for decades. We moved to Anchorage in '91 and have lived in our current house since '97, but I just can't imagine living in the same place that long right now! Perhaps it's moving every year the past few years for college. Living in dorms, then apartments/condos, moving back home temporarily, and now living in the Brave in random places, it's all so temporary.

I'm sure eventually I'll want to settle down and find a geographical location that I can cozy into and make my own, but for now I guess I just have a wanderlust. I think it's a good thing to have at this time in life though. I've never wanted to just settle for anything in my life, not men, not mediocrity, and I don't want to live somewhere just because I happen to be there. I want to seek out a place that fits me. I love Anchorage and I adore living in Alaska, but if I stay here it will be settling.

I always thought I would find someone in college, marry them and then settle down as a young person, but it has definitely not turned out that way at all, and I wouldn't change anything. Even the parts of the last few years that have supremely sucked. And now, I think the person I am is much better able to be in a relationship, even though I'm not and don't necessarily care to be. I'm just so much more confident in who I am as a person, the things I like and what I stand for.
Oh, and I dyed my hair the other night too. It's a little bit darker and I think my roots are less of a line and more of a gradient now. Ombre wasn't a complete success, but I like how it turned out. And my nails have been painted CMYK again! If you're not a printmaking geek like me and you don't know what CMYK is, it's the four colors used in process printing- cyan, magenta, yellow, and K stands for "key" which is black.

40 musings:
I like both versions of this outfit, but I like it tied up better. I always love your pattern mixing!
I know what you mean about not wanting to settle for anything. I feel like I've done that a lot in the last two years and I'm tired of it. Sounds like your Brave trip is going to be a great opportunity to see a lot of places that could be options for you. That's exciting!
your second to last paragraph is very empowering. I think we all go through terrible experiences in order to really grow up into the person we need to be. No one ever learns anything and turns into a better and braver individual without a little struggle. Those who never go through hardship are either lying to themselves or missing out on life, because you only really appreciate life and achieving your goals when you've had to put some effort into them.
love the flannel and florals, its always a fresh look!
i like both but i think it like the one with the tie better. i love how you styled that. i tried wearing a shirt tied like that but i felt way too country in it and changed (i was wearing it with cut off denim shorts so thats probably where the country came from, haha) but yours looks great. i love the mix of patterns as well.
I love your nails!
I love this dress! I think i actually prefer it with the belt, but i like both versions! I love how confident you are with pattern mixing, I wish i was like that.
I love the floral/plaid combo!!! Hard to pull off but you have done it wonderfullly!!
Cheers,
Karen

I love how your hair came out! It looks great even though the ombre didn't work out as expected.
wow you always have the greatest vintage pattern dress ever
and those nail painted are soooo cute amazing
I love the mix of patterns on this outfit :)

very nice. I love how the outfit matches the plane so much.
It is weird how many times we envision our lives a certain way and it doesn't end up that way for everyone. . .probably because there is something even cooler in store for you!! Lovely outfits/photos!!
I love your pattern mixing here! XOXO, Natalya
i know what you mean about settling, i want a job in fashion and to stay in northern Ireland would be settling. my friends are all getting married and buying houses but that just isnt for me yet.. i met my boyfriend after uni and luckily we share the same dream of going for our careers and in 2 years when he finishes his phd we are moving half way across the world to new york! it'll be scary but it'll be adventure!
I like the second version. It looks like mix of prints with a blouse and skirt. :)
I know what you mean. I'm in a relationship now but the time I had re-discovering myself when I was single was an amazing time! It definitely made me confident in myself and my interests.

I really love the mix of patterns here! I would never be brave enough to try that, but it looks great!
LOVE the dress. the rose print is so pretty. I've been so obsessed with roses lately. I posted about it here: http://lonerandrebel.wordpress.com/2010/08/11/everythings-comin-up-roses/
lovely as always!

florals & plaid- my favorite. :] i like the belted version best, although both are cute.
and you go girl. never just settle. i completely agree about having all these experiences. my boyfriend of 2 years and i just ended things and although it was/has been rough, i wouldn't change anything because i know i will be a stronger, better person for it. living in different places & being with different people- we need these things. :] my parents lived in 3 or 4 places together before i was born and they really enjoyed it.
Haha the CMYK nails are such a great idea, never thought of it before! A cool insider statement so to say :)
Oh what a beautiful dress, you Delightful Dozen girls are so lucky to be able to swap your clothes! What i like best in your photos is that the dress matches the blue on the waterplane (which I bet is pure intention because you're an aesthete). :-)
These photos are really great. I just can't get over the one of you standing on the plane. I absolutely love that dress!!
I love this dress on you. It's a great color. Personally, I like the tied up look, it has just a little more structure. The last picture is my FAVORITE, maybe even out of all of your pictures.
I like both versions, but I loooove the first version. It might have something to do with how you match the plane in the first photo. But, for some reason, I'm really digging the whole "oh I just threw this plaid shirt on because I was chilly" kinda thing. An that boots totally make the outfit.
I found this post to be super inspiring. I've always wanted to do what you're doing but I had my daughter young and never really got the opportunity. I can't say unfortunately because, well, I adore being a mother. I guess I look at it this way, she will be grown and in college and I'll still be young enough to go on my "life's adventure." Until then, I'll just view it through you as I suspect many many people will be doing.
wow i absolutely loved this post! I love that your not willing to just settle. and that your not in a rush like so many other people.
as for the outfit i love it both ways. but i think i like the shirt unbuttoned and with the belt its really cute!
xoxo, jaz
Just found your blog and really enjoyed the writing along w/the pics. Your comments on growth are oh so true and easy to relate to :)
If you didn't stay in AK, where would you like to go?
xoxo,
Carrie
thats funny, about the CMYK comment. i knew right away. 4 color process printing knowledge from work i never thought would be useful outside of that building.
I love your manicure!
As far as feeling unrooted, I think it's an inevitable part of being this age. I'm in the temporarily-living-at-home-again phase right now, and it's definitely a strange place to be, but also somehow liberating not to know what's going to happen next.
I love your nails and the dress! I know CMYK from a remote sensing class I took last year haha! Gotta love nerdy terminology! ;)

I think travel as much as you can while you're young. I've moved every year to 2.5 years for the last 16 years. I live in Mexico City right now and have seen so much of the US and Europe and Mexico, I think its a blessing.
I love your boots, I have a pair very similar and I am always a little afraid to wear them-sounds silly, but I grew up with a cowboy for a dad and so I feel like I'm playing dress up. oh, whatev, I'll wear them tomorrow with a pretty dress and get over it.
A rolling stone gathers no moss---love that one.
That dress was meant to be photographed with that plane!
Gosh, I LOVE that dress so much! You look great.
I know what you mean about not wanting to settle. I'm the same way. I'd rather explore and wait it out for something perfect.
Love me...Love me not
such a cute outfit, and I love your nails! :)
i love both versions of your outfit! absolutely lovely!

I knew what CMYK meant, but I love how you painted your nails that way, genius!
I do get what you mean about college. Constantly being told that a good x% of us meet our future partners at college (or uni for me) and all this garbage the media feeds us about time ticking by...my ex and I were together for three years and talked blissfully about our dreams for marriage, but it doesn't always have to be cookie-cutter and it shouldn't be. I am a bit scared at the thought of ending up alone but I blame the media solely for that. Individuality and independence are no longer celebrated as much as they should be. Look how much flak Samantha from Sex and the City gets from male critics. I think a person is so much better 100% happy in themself than ticking boxes with someone. So good for you! And your hair is amazing.
Your dress is darling! The tealy~blue and floral print won me over straight away. >w<
And don't settle for less, go out there and find the best! I have always had that philosophy too, so you go girl!
xox,
b. of Depict This!
These are some of the most beautiful pictures I've seen from you!! I ADORE this outfit..:) And, as a college senior on the verge of my own life, I totally relate to you in your life pondering!!
Your hair looks lovely, as do both versions of this outfit!
Oh, I identify!
i really like that dress. and floral with plaids? who would of thought?
