The retrospective

Since it was pouring rain last night, and I didn't have an umbrella or the desire to go out in the rain, I thought it'd be fun to post some of my favorite summer outfits from last year. I think I did that for spring, and since it's smack dab in the middle of summer it seems like an appropriate time for a retrospective of last season. Also, remember when I didn't have red hair? Also, hey look, this was before I chopped a bunch of it off!

That last look I pretty much copied in yesterday's post! What can I say, favorite skirt + favorite plaid top= super comfy outfit. Summer outfits aren't that much different from fall or spring outfits. Alaska never has a sweltering summer, so it's not necessary to dress for extreme heat. Thus, I still do quite a bit of layering and wearing of sweaters/tights.

This post reminds me of a comment I got asking me to talk about how I chose where to take my photos. It kind of all depends on my mood and what kind of time is available for my pictures. If I'm feeling lazy or don't have a lot of time to spend, I'll usually just go in my back yard and do them. This is why I had so many pictures featuring that truck on our neighbor's lot! I really like taking pictures in nature, or around more weathered buildings. The textures seem to jive with my style and hair. I feel silly trying to take pictures in a more urban setting. Plus, since I do all my own pictures with my tripod and self timer, doing pictures in the woods or natural settings makes it a lot easier. I have to focus on something where I'll be standing, otherwise I'll be out of focus when I run in front of the camera (doesn't it just sound so glamourous?).

Some days (weekends) I go on photo adventures and drive around trying to find somewhere cool to do my pictures. I'm still kind of shy when it comes to doing my pictures in public. Not really because I'm embarrassed, just because I don't really have the desire to respond to the obvious question, "what are you doing?" If I had a significant other to take my pictures I'd do it all the time in more populated areas, simply because it's normal to have another human being taking your picture. Not so much: lugging around a tripod and running back and forth setting the timer. It seems like such a natural thing to do when I'm alone, I don't realize how strange my actions are until I'm around people who don't know what I'm doing.

It will be fun and daring to find places to do my photos on the road. I have a feeling some shoots will be extremely remote, while others may be among fellow campers. I suppose it could be a good way to meet people. I'm usually opposed to meeting people, but on the road my purpose kind of is to meet people and see slices of life from other people's perspectives, so hopefully I can shed a little bit of my introverted shell.

I cant wait to see all the pics and hear the stories from your trip in the brave! That's gonna be such an adventure and so cool to look back on! I wish I could do something like that or have a family that would support something like that. oh well. I will live vicariously through you! lol. also, I really love the darker red hair shade A LOT. did you get it done at a salon or do it yourself? if yourself what color is it?? I'm sick of the shade of red I have now.

Agreed, taking pictures in nature is easier than urban settings. And, so much more relaxing!

I've started taking my pictures in a local park (prettier than my condo), but I can't always escape people :) In the morning there are usually walkers/joggers. I try to be polite and smile, say good morning... but I really don't want to go into an elevator speech around the why. This morning I hiked further into the woods just to see if I can get a more secluded spot in the future, haha!

Once a security guard kept cruising slowly by while I was taking pictures of myself. Then he parked behind another car to watch my scene. I moved over a bit to get better lighting and he lost sight of me, so he came on over. I guess to make sure I had left, but I was still there. I asked if he wanted to know what I was doing, and he said no. I said 'Ok bye!' and he was like 'Wait! What ARE you doing?' I laughed and said 'Too late now' and skipped on out of there.

love the look with the teal shirt and purple shoes, killer.

& i feel the same way about taking pictures. it's so strange when you stop to think about it, running in front of a tripod by yourself. that's why all my photos are from my backyard too. i wish i had someone to take them, way more socially acceptable haha. i'm thinking about going to this public park, they have these really cool basketball hoops that remind me of modern sculpture/art. but i don't know if i can muster up the courage

It is going to be awesome reading all the posts from the road. Thanks for your comment. I love the view from the crows Nest. I would go up there, during the summer, and not eat or drink. Just admire the view. Just snuck it in I guess. I also stayed at the Captain Hook the night I got married, before our 3 day "camping honeymoon trip" in Talkeetna.=) I love reading all your posts though, not only are you witty and have great taste, I get to see my homestate. Have a good day.

I like all of the looks! I really wish that i could take my own pics, my tripod is a mini one, and in order to get all of me in it, i have to set it far back, and then it does not get all the details. I feel bad making my BF take them all because he would rather take a picture of flowers or something.

I think you have a lot of talent. Plus if someone asks what you are doing, you can always say "I am in a photography class" lol :)

i love the first outfit and am thinking of copying it :)
my boyfriend and i just completed a cross country road trip and you really can't not meet people. camping is such a social thing and if you look like you're on an adventure then people LOVE to come talk to you.... it was so fun seeing the country, you'll have so much fun! i already want to hit the road again....

I agree with you about taking pictures by yourself around other people. I get so embarrassed! The other day I was taking pictures in a pretty deserted part of the park I go to when a guy drove up the driveway to the playground and started watching me. He seriously just stopped the car and stared. Such a creeper!

I always enjoy retrospectives and this one is really nice.

Do you find that your style has changed a lot in a year? I find it so interesting that you live in Alaska.

Pictures in nature have a really nice feeling though urban landscapes can be amazing too.

one time i had propped my camera on something near my work and i was taking outfit posts and then a security guard came up to me and wouldn't look away. it was so awkward. i haven't taken pictures there since. i know how you feel.

lol I read a long time ago that you find it embarrassing, but somewhere inside of me I was like Naaahhh, I'd be fine, I'm an extrovert, I could -
no I couldn't!
I tried it a few blog posts ago and everytime I got so much as a wiff of another living being I was re-folding up my tripod, or looking busy, or pretending to text...
haha, horrific.
I was very wrong.
maybe it comes from that innate fear of seeming vain, or somehow self important.
we will both have to try and be 'BRAVE'.

It's alright, I feel awkward doing the back-and-forth tripod run in my own house. :P I tried venturing out around my place, but I get so anxious when I step out the door with my tripod.

you should get a little remote for your camera!! they are super cheap, like 15$ :D and they work really well.

danielle said...

totally feeling you when you say about the tripod situation and running back and forth, especially in public...I make my 10 year old come with me-ha! Many times I still have her use the tripod I set up, but she hits the button. But she's getting so good with using the camera for other shots, I may dump the tripod! Get yourself a kid, they're great for helping with photog moments-HA!
We love looking at your blog, btw! She (my 10 year old) loves your sense of style. Me, too!. Thanks for inspiring...
