I should clarify that I don't hate all fashion magazines as a blanket statement. I don't hate Vogue as a whole, though I disagree with much of its contents and what it represents. And I don't literally hate Anna Wintour. I actually quite admire her strength and tenacity. But. I feel like traditional fashion journalism is dying. We're not in the 50's any more. Women don't need to be force fed trends, we're so much more independent now and feel comfortable and able formulating our own opinions, rather than being told what to think. And when I say "traditional" I don't mean "print". I for one ADORE print (what can I say, I was a printmaking major!). Web based is great too. The immediacy, the social aspect, the amazing resources available at fingertip. There is nothing like holding a magazine in your hands though. Or seeing the photograph in person, not just in digital format on a screen. Tactility is really important to me. When I used to run my old fashion magazine, there was nothing more joyful than holding the first proof of my issue in my hands, physically. It was amazing.

I think publications like NYLON are "getting it" a lot more than others. I like that I can see affordable outfits and more interesting and "out there" trends. I'd love to do a magazine that was focused on street style, thrifting, vintage, and the occasional designer piece. This is basically what CORSAIR was and I loved every minute of working on that magazine.
I don't mean to hate on designers. I understand the incredible work they go through to create such stunning clothing, and it's expensive for a reason, not just arbitrarily. I feel like designer duds are much more representative though. Those of us who could never dream of owning a designer piece can still take part in the dialogue the designer is sharing with us by being inspired by the outfits and clothing he or she makes.
I think I'm going to stick out the semester and reevaluate stuff in June. I'm taking three classes and I'm only supposed to be taking two, so I did actually overload myself... I'm an overachiever, which can be good or disastrous. Taking classes in Alaska when my school is in San Francisco makes things difficult, and while I'd love to be able to go to class physically, I don't regret not moving to SF. It would have been the wrong timing and I'm sure I would feel even more overwhelmed than I am now.
Okay, so less about my life and thoughts, and more about the outfit! I grabbed this photo from tumblr the other day and decided I must recreate this outfit and thus, today's outfit of mine was born. I'll let you in on a secret: There's more about this photo I'm going to emulate, but I'm not telling just yet....
Also, my photos are from the horse show grounds near my work! I can't even estimate how many hours I've spent in these stalls. Though, I've never been there during winter! There was so much snow! I forgot that it snowed while I was in Hawaii and I tried to go my usual route and found myself up to my hips in snow. Yeah. I was wearing tights. It was cold. Luckily someone had plowed the road to the barns (which I did not know at first) so I made my way over to the road and didn't have to wade through the snow anymore.

Another great outfit!
The scarf is amazing.
(psst, does that mean that you're dying your hair red or taking a photo next to a railroad track?)

Things are definitely changing in the fashion world. For the better, I think. There's so much more access to inspiration to get our creative brains cook'n now. And it's all coming from everyday people who share their ideas with others because it's something they are passionate about. Hope things turn out alright with your classes. Sometimes you need to learn about what you don't like to understand and appreciate what you DO like even more. :)
i think you should start your own magazine, about individual style. you already have such a following, and im sure it would spread. you should seriously think about it!!!
You look adorable!! I am loving T-shirts again...after so long, they remain a staple :P
You seem less stressed in this post, I hope everything is working out for you!
I am excited to see what the surprise is!!
I bet it was a shock going from Hawaii back to Alaska! I would prefer the beach over snow ANY day.
Are you going to be dying your hair? If you are, I can't WAIT to see that!
I love the setting of these photos, it's great to see another part of your life, the equestrian side :)
I immediately assumed you're going to dye your hair red...I guess I'll have to just wait and see!
great outfit! love the shorts!
You are super brave wearing shorts and nothing tights in AK during the winter...much less trudging through the snow!! I am still uber jealous of those minne boots, I wish I had snatched them up while I could.
As for you speaking to change in the fashion world, I feel like my blog is going to end up speaking a lot more towards change in the enviro and political world...boring, but important to me.
I agree with Pauline. You should start your own mag again. Be editor in chief. Holla.
I hope you're dying your hair that amazing shade of red! Your complexion will totally lend itself to that! Well keep on keeping on throughout the semester. I know it has to be exhausting, but May is only a 1 1/2 months away.
I love print too. I like old books especially but often find myself enjoying glossy mags fashion or otherwise. I actually really love the magazine format. It's lovely to look at. It's portable. It's concise. It doesn't have to focus on just one thing. I like flipping back and forth and reading out of order. But I totally agree that there isn't much in fashion mags to grab and hold my attention. I would love a magazine that focused more on street style and vintage. But I think that isn't done more because of advertising. I've managed to have a life time sub to Lucky. I do find inspiration there. But every page does list the price and brand not just the formal advertisements. I don't know if they'd be able to stay in print if they couldn't sell the product.
I don't look at fashion online. Other than individual blogs, those I love, but in general I don't follow the trends or designers. So if I happen to know anything that's currently "in" it's because I saw it in a print magazine somewhere.
idk.
lol ;)
Nice post!
Now a days lot of designs have arrived in to men & womens fashion style. But one of the key items every men & woman should have is a pair of jeans that flatters your figure and can be dressed up or down.
Ahhhh, I hope you are going to dye your red, although I will be ten kinds of jealous :) I've always wanted to, but with olive skin and dark eyes, it would never work for me, so I've settled for caramel/auburn highlights. You, however, with your porcelain skin and blue eyes...it will look amazing! Like when Coco Rocha dyed hers! I am getting verrrrrry vicariously excited over here :)
oh my goodness, are you going to dye your hair? I love red hair. but I love black just as much, so I think yours is gorgeous.
I think your idea for a magazine sounds perfect. when you start it, let me know so I can come work for you! haha
When I saw the tumblr photo I was like "wait. Is that still her?" Hahaha. Also, I have a good guess as to what else you're emulating from it. If I'm right, I think you should totally do it ;)
RED.
do it. I'll let you in on a secret.. we have waaaaay more fun than blondes.
way to stick it out! Some things just take time and super cute outfit.
Beautiful outfit! I love the photos!
To partially quote you, I'd love to SEE a magazine that was focused on street style, thrifting, vintage, and the occasional designer piece. I'll read them on occasion, but generally fashion magazines are kind of a turn-off for me because their idea of a bargain is a shirt that costs "only" $80. I sew a lot of my clothes, so I've had formalwear that cost around that or less! Personally, I'd love to see something that would show me how to mix the stuff I get at thrift stores and my own DIY and whatnot into real, wearable outfits. So if you started a mag around the lines of what you said, I'd definitely read it!
Love your outfit especially the shorts. your photos are always so amazing
Ok, firstly it's either got to be red hair or you're going to start hanging out on railway tracks!
Love this outfit, you make shorts look awesome. I have such a huge fear of shorts but after seeing these pics I'm inspired to attempt to overcome it this summer! (though shorts + snow....brrrrr!)
I absolutely agree with your thoughts on the fashion industry 100%. You used to run a magazine?
Might I just say that whatever you do with your life, I really do believe it'll be awesome? Just sayin'.
Also, I love what you've said about magazines. A magazine like you've described would just be fantastic. You should maybe start (another?) one, hmm? ♥
you're not going to die your hair orange, are you? (none of my business really, but your hair is kind of unique, and I would be worried about it). Glad to see that you have not quit... it is probably tough being into fashion in Alaska...all that snow/cold/bears/tundra....
I love this outfit! I dont think I will ever get sick of tights with shorts! :) You look great as always!
I absolutely adore your tights collection. And how you seem to prefer shorts and skirts to jeans. Haha, I'm kinda like you on that level. :) I heart your blog to infinity!!!!
Lotsa love,
S.
your pictures are amazing i need to star taking some too.. Nibbyboi.wordpress.com
I love the eagle on your shirt!
I agree with you that magazines should have affordable items and represent different trends, other than just high fashion. I know Seventeen magazine is corny, and not as glamorous and beautiful as Vogue or some of the other magazines out there, but I love it for using models of all different colors, shapes and sizes. They also try to show different trends and styles using (mostly) affordable clothing, even though a good portion of the outfits they put together aren't all that appealing. While I still will probably choose a Vogue over a Seventeen, if nothing more for visual pleasure, I think that these high fashion magazines that show nothing but bone thin, tall models wearing overpriced clothes should adopt some of Seventeen's corniness.
I love the blazer and scarf, it's really pretty :)
cute outfit! especially love the lace tights + those shorts.

Love thiss! Those shorts might have to make their way over to Michigan... ;) You should start up your fashion magazine again and get girls to write for you and design and collaborate! That'd be too fun, even though I know you're busy out of your mind already. Haha!
wise insights and beautiful pictures! Always a pleasure to stop by and see what you are posting.

Fab post ... I really do like those boots...every time you post them I keep thinking that I must get a pair !
I totally agree with you about the direction of fashion magazines. I used to pour over them for hours before there were fashion blogs (oh, the simple days!!). But now, I feel like they're definitely inspirational to an extent but not necessarily "realistic inspiration". Not for everyday life. Flipping through a magazine full of outfitted vintage, *unique* street style and lifestyle - would be so much more interesting and relevant and current for today! If you're up for writing it, I'm up for buying it :)
I think fashion magazines are ridiculous, their idea of a cheap find is a $50 purse, which I'm not very comfortable with spending on a purse.
