Victorian Sensibilities

It's been snowing for like two days here! I guess it's snowing all over the country. I heard rumors of DC getting dumped on. Luckily up here we're well prepared for such weather.
Today I bought my airline tickets to NYFW! It's going to be crazy spending a week in NYC with all these fabulous fashionable people, and here I am, this little girl from Alaska. I always feel pretty chic up here, but in NYC? Needless to say I am brainstorming like mad for outfits! I really really don't want to check a bag (I am always afraid they'll lose my bags, and I like being able to avoid waiting around for my bags to get off the plane), so I'm going to try and shove all my clothes into a little carry-on.

shorts & scarf/F21 from Idée Géniale :: blazer/thrifted :: shoes/payless

This is another Delightful Dozen look! The shorts and scarf are from Idée Géniale, and they're so fun! I have like two pairs of shorts and I don't like them that much. I can rarely find a pair of shorts that is flattering on me (though, truth be told, I haven't been looking that hard). I like these ones though! They're just fun and cute.

I've been pretty excited starting my new classes. I'm learning a lot more about "high" fashion– looking through designers' collections. I think what I'm most looking forward to is seeing the references to historical fashions in contemporary designs. Right now we're looking at Victorian fashions and seeing how contemporary designers use design elements from those Victorian styles (bustles/corsetry/high necked blouses/leg-of-mutton sleeves).
I learned the same thing in reference to other forms of art when I took all my art history classes for undergrad, but it's neat to see how fashion really is just another form of art, sculptural in nature, with the body as the framework. Pretty fascinating stuff.

What a great look! I love the shorts on both you and Mel. So as far as the luggage situation goes, I'm doing the same (just carry-on) but I know I'll be doing some shopping. Maybe I'll just layer 3 outfits while on the plane so I can fit more clothes in my bag. hehehe.

You look so cute! Make sure you get a carry-on that is under the size limit or else they might make you check it!

you know, when i woke up to nearly 2 feet of snow this morning, i was pretty amazed and excited. and i thought of you: "she wouldn't be the least bit fazed by all this snow.."

:)

i never check bags, even when i go overseas to visit my boyfriend for two weeks. they once lost my luggage for 3 weeks when i'd checked it! no way i'm going to let them do it again.

Don't worry about looking chic in NYC, you are already chic! besides I find girls who don't live in major fashion cities to be the most stylish. they are actually more creative and don't take fashion for G

Going to college in DC (but originally hailing from Minnesota) I can definitely say they have nooo clue what they're doing. we only seem to have 2 ploughs haha, obviously not enough for 2 feet! there are ridiculous rumors of being stuck for 5 days, give me a break!

What a great combo. I loved how you put your own twist on incorporating the shorts into your outfit. Your blog inspires me so much!

The way you styled the shorts is so cute! It's like you've always had them, but never dug through your closet till now.

And geekily enough, I'm fascinated at how past decades of fashion like Victorian have inspired modern day haute couture and design labels. It's just... cool!

Shorts are cute love the floral print.

It is weird but how you feel about what you are going to wear in NY is how I feel when I go to London. I am pleased that I am not the only one that feels this way when venturing out of you local town.

First off major brave points for wearing those adorable shorts in the freeze that is the winter up there. Did you wear them to your work or stay in? I like seeing how you different gals are pairing the same items. Great idea. I think that is awesome that you are going to NYFW, I hope you have a blasty blast. One of my best friends is from NY. YOu will be fine in their with style, only very few dress the way movies and stuff portray, you will fit right in with the uber fashionista's.=)

Yeah, my boyfriend and I had two amazing concerts we were supposed to go to in Charlottesville, which just a few hours away from D.C. (we live in Virginia Beach). They declared a state of emergency.. needless to say, we didn't get to go!

Gosh, you effortlessly mix patterns! Seriously, I think you are the queen of it. Great combination.

Great shorts! Have a ton of fun at NY Fash Week. The one time I got invited to the tent was last-minute and I wore the boringest outfit ever. On the bright side, Office Max had free champers???

Hi, I will steal your shorts, thank you. ;D hehe, I saw some like that only for $13, but when I went to the store, they were not there. :( so cute!

Your floral shorts make your outfit awesome. I always go into F21, and lately I've been leaving empty handed. I guess need to look harder for cute stuff.

I live in DC, and I've been outside for hours trying to uncover my car from snow. My fingers are in pain, and yet, I'm typing away, leaving comments on blogs. lol. And my dogs are afraid to go out. My mom said they were "drowning" out in the backyard. Good thing school is canceled tomorrow because I'm still not done with my car.
